The noise is deafening, right?

Photo is AI-generated, but the vibe is oh so real.

There was a time when nobody seemed to know what perimenopause was. I was there. Now everyone seems to know about it, but nobody agrees on anything. At the same time, marketing narratives have taken over. We're inundated with must-dos and don't-touches, all heavily steeped in fear.

Take hormones. Don’t take hormones. Why haven't you taken hormones? Lift heavy. Lift fast. Exercise less. Eat more. Protein maxxing. More carbs. Fibre maxxing. Eat sugar. Definitely don't eat sugar. Fast. Don't fast. Fix your cortisol. Heal your gut. Take this supplement. Get that test.

It never ends.

And now, at every turn, it's our fault for never learning to regulate our nervous systems. I've covered the human body for three decades, and I'm personally as frustrated as you are: the bar keeps moving just as we reach it. Some of what we are hearing is misinformation. But there's something much harder to navigate: perfectly legitimate information, stripped of its context and caveats.

Take the idea that menopause is a hormone deficiency with an easy fix: hormone therapy. It's true that we make far less systemic estrogen and progesterone at midlife. But the body does makes hormones locally. Think of it as a super-sophisticated decentralized postmenopausal backup system not that many people seem to know about. For some women, that system carries them through well. For others, it isn't enough. Which one are you? That's the question the simple story skips.

The reality is:

• We're part of a population, and we're also each completely individual.

• A practitioner can be excellent and still prescribe from a particular training and belief system.

• A treatment that transforms one woman’s life can make another feel worse.

Meanwhile, you're standing in the middle of it thinking: Can somebody please just tell me what the hell is happening to me and what I should do about it?

Take a breath. You can stop trying to fix everything at once. Your body is an incredibly smart biological system. She just needs some good directions.

That's what we're going to sort out, together.

Is it perimenopause – or something else?

Is it perimenopause – or something else?

Why am I so angry at everyone?

Why can't I think clearly?

What if I can't sleep again tonight?

Why can't I remember anything?

Why am I so anxious?

Why does everything suddenly hurt?

Why am I so tired?

Why am I getting so many migraines?

Why am I gaining weight?

What's the deal with this heavy bleeding?

Maybe you aren't even in perimenopause yet. Maybe you are and are getting the medical runaround – or the options you were presented with don't sit right. Or you hopped on hormone therapy right away, but you’re still having old issues and some new ones, too, and you want to know why and what to do. Maybe you don't want to go on hormones at all and are looking at the options available to you. Maybe you just want to find out more about the big picture: what's real and what's a story.

Or maybe your biggest vibe goes something like this: I don’t feel like myself very much right now. It's freaking me out, I feel really alone and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do about it.

The Pivot

You don't need another agenda or marketing push. You need to understand the terrain. To know what deserves your attention – and what probably doesn’t.  What roads are available to you without bias, and without fear. You need the big picture. And then you need to be able to answer the most important question for yourself: What do I want to do?

This is not a course.

It's a live navigation experience. Four weeks. Six live sessions. Two invited experts joining us along the way. A simple daily practice of observing what's actually happening in your body and your life. People figuring this out alongside you on WhatsApp. And me: I've been through it, I'm hip to the spin, narratives and marketing, and as a GenX journalist, I've spent a career being rigorous and accountable. I'll help you navigate.

Can't make it live? Every session is recorded and uploaded to your portal by the next morning. Each session stands on its own. And you have full access to replays for an entire year – zero pressure.

The Philosophy

When it comes to perimenopause, it's never just one thing driving it. And it's never just one thing that fixes it.

Of course hormones matter.

But so does sleep. Metabolic and gut health. Whatever might be going on with your thyroid, your liver or your iron stores. Nourishment, movement, recovery, light, the quality of relationships. Sex. Work and creativity. Family and community. Whatever trauma and adverse childhood experiences you are carrying, how you experience, process and release stress, and how you take up space in the world. Your deepest desires, some of which you've never even let yourself admit to.

Perimenopause and menopause is nothing short of a complete identity shift, something that is ignored as the loudest voices focus almost entirely on physiology. We are flesh and bone and we are energy, matter and space that science doesn't fully understand yet – and almost no one is talking about it. But we should be, because sometimes what we really need through this transition falls somewhere in between.

Sometimes, for example, you need permission to do less. To take a breath and finally realize that the thing driving you hardest is the inner tyrant who’s been holding a whip for 30 years saying: You cannot stop.

Perimenopause is not as simple as a hormone deficiency. It is not an inevitable decline. And I'm not going to gaslight you by selling it to you as some glorious spiritual awakening either. (Although there is definitely some of that to look forward to!)

It can be a rough transition to a much better destination.

It is also a crossroads – a period of vulnerability and opportunity, all at the same time.

Peri/menopause opens a window: helping you learn to listen to your body, examine what you've brought with you into midlife, decide what you want to carry forward – and what you might want to leave behind.

All this gets much less complicated when you can see the whole picture through a lens of scientific evidence, expert opinion and human experience.

With a healthy dose of discernment and common sense.

Why me?

Perimenopause hit me like a baseball bat around 40. I developed anxiety so intense I would shake with it. I had nightmares, night after night, that I was dying. I developed terrifying intrusive thoughts. A simple text could send a sheet of fear ripping through my body. Then came headaches bad enough to send me to the emergency room. Chest pain. Gut problems. Bloating. Pain. Weight changes. And years of strange symptoms that seemed to come from everywhere.

I saw more than a dozen practitioners and emergency-room personnel during these years. I tried so many wellness, biohacking, food and fitness trends I will probably write a book about them one day. Over the years I would uncover thyroid issues, insulin resistance, adverse childhood experiences and more.

I spent years and thousands of dollars trying to solve the perimenopause puzzle on my own.

Now I want to use my decades of journalism experience to help others who may be frozen in the face of polarization, hype, FOMO and fear.

So many people sharing information in the perimenopause and menopause space have a financial incentive to sell you on a particular protocol. I do not.

I’m Ann Marie McQueen, a journalist who has been covering the human body, science, health, wellness and the things people claim will make us healthier for 30 years – ever since I lost my mom to pancreatic cancer. She was in her 50s; I was in my 20s. I founded Hotflash inc in 2020 because I couldn’t find the kind of perimenopause and menopause journalism I needed myself.

Since then, I’ve interviewed hundreds of experts: doctors, researchers, scientists, therapists and practitioners. I talk to people working inside conventional medicine and outside it. I explore the sizable gap between the mainstream approach and functional/integrative medicine; I look at the history and global perspectives and overlooked options like Traditional Chinese Medicine, homeopathy and Ayurveda.

I'm not a doctor. And for this particular job, that's incredibly useful.

I talk to people about personal sovereignty, about the parts of our biology science is only beginning to understand, and about all the things we don’t yet know about this body we live in.

I track the dominant narrative, that menopause is a hormone deficiency to be fixed with hormone therapy, and treat it as what it is: one story, and an incomplete one. And I've interviewed famous doctors and experts who disagree with it.

I'm not a doctor. And for this particular job, that's incredibly useful.

I have a bird's-eye view of all the approaches that can help in this space. I've clocked a dozen ways to prescribe hormone therapy, for example, some of them diametrically opposed. I've spent years decoding the entire landscape for you.

My only goal is for you to understand what's happening and then decide for yourself what to do about it.

On deadline, circa 1997.

Plus: 2 experts to go deeper

During two of our six live sessions, we will be joined by invited experts who bring fresh perspectives into the conversation. They’re not coming to tell you the answer to all this either. But they are going to help us examine and understand two vital aspects to this transition: getting better sleep and understanding identity shifts.

On the left: Morgan Adams, a transformative holistic sleep coach for women who struggle with getting a good night's sleep consistently. Her SleepEasy™ Method helps women improve their sleep quality AND their relationship with sleep so they can live less stressful days. Morgan understands firsthand how insomnia can impact quality of life and spent almost a decade dependent on prescription sleeping pills She’s also a two-time breast cancer survivor who advocates for a lifestyle of disease prevention.

On the right: Tina LeAnn, founder of The Sovereign Soul and creator of Recode Your System™, a method for identity development that draws on neuroscience, psychology, somatic integration and unconscious pattern work. Before she moved into human development, she spent more than 20 years as a mechanical designer solving complex systems problems, and she now brings that same lens to people. A writer and speaker, Tina helps women understand the unconscious patterns shaping their lives so they can move from automatic adaptation to conscious choice.

Understand yourself

For four weeks, you're going to get curious about yourself again. It may have been years.

Each day, you’ll take some time to answer three questions I learned from a practitioner who changed how I think about all of this, GP, midwife and herbalist, Dr Aviva Romm: How do I feel? What do I need? What do I want? That's how we start to notice what depletes us, what restores us and what brings us joy.

This isn't journaling to turn you into a full-time menopause project.

It's an important practice to learn to recognize your own patterns, tune out the noise, gain confidence and start feeling better. You've got a big life to get back to.

Who this is for:

Anyone who wants to get out of the weeds and move from living in fear into power and sovereignty. Specifically:

1. Women in premenopause who want to make changes now so they don't hit a wall later.

2. Women in perimenopause who want to find their own path – and stop feeling pulled in multiple directions.

3. Women who are postmenopausal but still having symptoms.

Who this is also for:

The women who care for women in midlife. Whether you are an acupuncturist, nurse practitioner, nutritionist, therapist, trainer or coach, you already have your expertise.

But you probably don't have time to spend years interviewing hundreds of experts, following the research, tracking every menopause argument, investigating the hormone wars, and listening to thousands of women. I do.

This experience will help you see what is happening outside your own discipline, so you can better recognize when a patient or client needs something you don't provide.

Who this is not for:

If you want a prescription. I’m not a doctor, and I can't diagnose you or prescribe anything. What I can do is help you walk into your next appointment knowing what to ask.

If you want a simple fix. I wish there were one.

If you want one protocol handed to you. This is about building your plan from your own body, your own options and your own priorities.

If you need urgent medical care, or you're dealing with a serious health problem. Please start with your doctor. This program sits alongside your medical care. It can't replace it.

Why November 2026?

There is no ticking time bomb here. (I don't do fear-based marketing.)

You aren't going to turn to dust if you wait.

But another year is almost over. There are likely multiple things you thought you’d have completely sorted out by now. This is the one area that impacts everything else – your energy, your career, your money, your relationships and your confidence.

What if this is one thing you get sorted before the year ends?

One last thing

I don’t want you to outsource your peri/menopause to me either. That’s not sovereignty.

I want you to learn enough about your body, your options, the evidence and its limitations, the competing perspectives – and yourself – that you can sit across from any practitioner, or read any terrifying headline and ask:

Does this make sense?

Who profits from this?
What do
I think?

Your body isn’t letting you down. It’s brought you all the way here. Let’s learn how to work with it.

Don't outsource your life.

Let's build your Peri/Menopause Game Plan.
